چکیده
Information storage by means of magnetic media is one of the oldest technologies for data recording, since the early prototype of magnetic wire recorder, the ‘‘telegraphone’’, was made by the Danish engineer Valdemar Paulsen in 1898. Magnetic media became very popular in the mid-1900s, with analog recording on audio and video tapes being developed; a milestone was the first digital device for magnetic recording, the RAMAC, made by IBM in 1956. At that time, 5 megabytes could only be stored in a device weighing several tons taking up a whole laboratory, whereas today, portable devices fitting into a pocket can store hundreds of gigabytes! However, the basic principles of digital storage in magnetic media have remained essentially unchanged, and an engineer working on the IBM projects in the 1950s would

Will spin-relaxation times in molecular magnets permit quantum information processing?
Using X-band pulsed electron-spin resonance, we report the intrinsic spin-lattice (T1) and phase-coherence (T2) relaxation times in molecular nanomagnets for the first time. In Cr7M heterometallic wheels, with M=Ni and Mn, phase-coherence relaxation is dominated by the coupling of the electron spin to protons within the molecule. In deuterated samples T2 reaches 3 micros at low temperatures, wh...
متن کاملEPR and inelastic neutron scattering in spin-frustrated V3 and Cu3 nanomagnets with Dzialoshinsky-Moriya exchange
The inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and EPR transitions are considered for the spin-frustrated V3 and Cu3 nanomagnets. It is shown that the DM exchange and distortions determine the Q-dependence and redistribution of the intensities of the intraand inter-doublet INS transitions in the spin-frustrated 2(S=1/2) states as well as the intensities of the EPR transitions. The peculiarities of the ...
متن کاملTorque-Detected Electron Spin Resonance as a Tool to Investigate Magnetic Anisotropy in Molecular Nanomagnets
The method of choice for in-depth investigation of the magnetic anisotropy in molecular nanomagnets is high-frequency electron spin resonance (HFESR) spectroscopy. It has the benefits of high resolution and facile access to large energy splittings. However, the sensitivity is limited to about 107 spins for a reasonable data acquisition time. In contrast, methods based on the measurement of the ...
متن کاملMany-body models for molecular nanomagnets.
We present a flexible and effective ab initio scheme to build many-body models for molecular nanomagnets, and to calculate magnetic exchange couplings and zero-field splittings. It is based on using localized Foster-Boys orbitals as a one-electron basis. We apply this scheme to three paradigmatic systems, the antiferromagnetic rings Cr8 and Cr7Ni, and the single-molecule magnet Fe4. In all case...
متن کاملIntermediate spin, Schrödinger cat states, and nanomagnets.
Quantum tunneling in nanomagnets finds a natural description in terms of intermediate spin. Periodic magnetic effects correspond to a change of flux by the flux quantum Phi(0). Schrödinger cat states with different superpositions of the applied magnetic field occur. The molecular magnet Fe(8) is discussed and new effects are predicted for Mn(12).
